An Introduction to CBD

What is CBD

CBD or Cannabidiol is an extract from the Cannabis plant. Found predominantly in the flowers and to a lesser extent on the leaves and stalks, Cannabidiol is one of the dominant cannabinoids in the Cannabis Plant and has been proven to have many health benefits.

Unlike THC, the other prominent cannabinoid in Cannabis, CBD is not intoxicating and does not make you feel high. In fact, CBD is considered very safe and has numerous beneficial uses, without negative side effects.

Cannabis has been used as a natural medicine for thousands of years by many cultures around the world. Now, modern scientists and doctors can study the plant, and how it interacts with our bodies in much finer, scientific detail and the results have been exceptionally exciting and beneficial.

Scientific research shows CBD can reduce anxiety, improve sleep, improve metabolism, and reduce pain and inflammation. It may help relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia, IBS, arthritis, eczema, epilepsy, cancers, and many other health issues that are often difficult to treat.

CBD works with your body’s Endocannabinoid System and natural functions to return your body to homeostasis and good health.

The Endocannabinoid System

First identified in the early 1990s, the Endocannabinoid System is a complex, internal system of receptors, signalling molecules and metabolic enzymes, that is present throughout our body. It is responsible for achieving balance (homeostasis) in our body’s functions, ensuring they are neither overactive nor underactive.

What is CBD Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System plays a critical role in maintaining optimal functioning throughout the body and in all spheres of health. It is responsible for creating balance in our sleep patterns, mood, metabolism, hormone production, and immune system. It is also known to effect pain, memory, cell production, cardiovascular functioning, the reproductive system and bone generation.

Our body naturally produces Endocannabinoids which are the signallers in the Endocannabinoid System, communicating with receptors to restore balance to different areas of your body, from your neurological functions, to your immune system and major organs.

Phyto cannabinoids from the Cannabis plant, such as CBD, are also able to communicate with the receptors of the Endocannabinoid System in the same way that our own, Endocannabinoids do. Therefore, by supplementing the body’s system with CBD it encourages balance in the delicate and complex functions of our body.

Two types Cannabinoid Receptors have been identified in the body; the CB1 receptors found mostly in our central nervous system, and CB2 receptors found in our peripheral nervous system, immune system and major organs. Through these receptors found throughout the body, Endocannabinoids and Phyto-cannabinoids communicate with the Endocannabinoid System to maintain homeostasis in our body.

CBD helps to balance the system that is responsible for balance in your body. Everything works better when it is balanced.

What to look for when buying CBD

  • Extracted from Organic Hemp, to ensure no pesticides or heavy metals are present in the extract it is essential to only use organic hemp grown in healthy soil.
  • Supercritical C02 Extraction, this is considered industry best practice and because only air is used, it leaves no nasty residues and is kind to the environment.
  • 3rd party testing with test results available so that you are sure of what is in your CBD extract, and what is not.

Easy warning signs would be products that do not show ingredients on their labels or do not show the amount of CBD in the product. Without this information, how do you know what you are putting in your body?
